Kneipp – since 1891
Back in the 19th century, nestled deep in the heart of Germany, Sebastian Kneipp (1821-1897), a naturopath and priest, cured himself of a severe case of tuberculosis using the very nature around him, combined with cold and hot water therapies (hydrotherapy). At that time, the disease was usually fatal, but Kneipp came across an eighteenth-century book about hydrotherapy that inspired him to immerse himself several times a week in the icy Danube River. These brief exposures to cold water seemed to bolster his immune system, sending his disease into remission.
Miraculously cured, he began his quest to provide all people a simple plan to improve and maintain good health with the healing powers of water combined with plants and herbs. Sebastian was famously known as a healer. Thousands of people visited him in the foot hills of the German Alps to learn his naturopathic methods and to be “cured”.
Sebastian Kneipp became friends and close partners with a Würzburg pharmacist who shared his conviction using naturopathic medicine and healing remedies. Using only natural plant essences and pure ingredients as a base, they created the formulas that still live on today in an extensive range of bath and body treatments, now with an international cult following.

“Nature has provided us generously with everything we need to remain in good health”(Sebastian Kneipp)
Sebastian Kneipp believed in total wellness for body, mind, and soul. With a holistic approach, his therapies cured illness but also maintained good health. He recognized, over 100 years ago, the need for preventive care and self-care, taking responsibility for one’s own health.
It is even more important today when we lead more hectic, stressful lives. We spend hours sitting at work, in the car, in front of the TV and computer. Meals are rushed and often lacking nutrition. Our life expectations are longer, so it behooves us to maintain our bodies in the best condition possible. A healthy body will also demand less medical care which is becoming increasingly expensive.
In his approach, Sebastian Kneipp considered the elements of water, plants, exercise, nutrition, and balance to be closely linked and united them in a holistic life philosophy. They are known as “The Five Pillars.”
“If water is an excellent agent for the healthy person to maintain his health and strength, it is also the most natural and simplest remedy.” (Sebastion Kneipp)
Kneipp water applications (hydrotherapy), also known as the “Kneipp-Kur”, are based on the strengthening of the body’s own self-healing powers through hot and cold stimulus.
“Every plant has its own individual effect.” (Sebastian Kneipp)
The healing power of herbs and medicinal plants (phytotherapy) has been known for centuries, and Kneipp has relied on high concentrations of natural plant extracts in its formulas and products to maintain health and well-being.
“Inactivity weakens, exercise strengthens, overexertion damages.” (Sebastian Kneipp)
Incorporate exercise into everyday life (Kinesitherapy). It revitalizes and strengthens the body’s natural defenses and conveys a sense of general well-being.
“If you notice that you have eaten, you have already eaten too much.” (Sebastian Kneipp)
A balanced diet is the foundation of a healthy and active life. Eating consciously, a high-quality mixed diet with plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, grain and dairy products is recommended.
“Not until I incorporated the soul did I find success.” (Sebastian Kneipp)
A balanced lifestyle is the basis for a healthy, active and satisfying life. It is the interaction of water, plants, exercise and nutrition that contributes to your health and lends to a balanced body and mind.
The Kneipp Kur
In the 1800’s, Sebastian Kneipp developed the 5 Pillars of his holistic philosophy which were the basis of the Kneipp-Kur. The elements combined, were used to develop hydrotherapy treatments combined with plants and herbs that could improve health and well-being.
In the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, an entire town is devoted to Kneipp Wellness. It is Kneipp Town-the spa village of Bad (Spa) Wörishofen, where every hotel and guesthouse offers the Kneipp-Kur, and the doctors practice Kneipp Wellness every day. It is here that Kneipp’s 5 Pillars of Wellness are practiced vigorously so they become a way of life-to extend life. A Kur typically meant “regular” treatments, either at home or in a clinic, for at least a 2 week period.

Kneipp obtains fair-traded shea butter
Kneipp obtains nuts of the Shea Tree from Burkina Faso, one of the poorest countries in the world. Kneipp is aware that the trade of Shea Nut is an important source of life for many West-African families and obtains fair-traded shea butter.
Because the Kneipp GmbH company values excellent quality when deploying raw materials, as well as sustainable production of raw materials, Kneipp obtains its Shea Butter from the company AAK, which initiated in Burkina Faso, together with the UNDP (United Nations Development Plan) a fair-traded project. Additionally they support specifically the women on-site, who take over the traditional harvest of the Shea Nuts.
